Table of Contents of this Page: “Introduction of Alien Contact & Human Evolution”INTRODUCTION: This Introduction is described through my personal experiences as an Experiencer/Alien Abductee, which has been within my complete, conscious awareness for the last 2. Although, it was clear to me that I had been experiencing and confronted with unusual, paranormal and anomalous events since childhood. It is my hope that the information provided within this website can help those who find themselves in similar circumstances, to find a way through those experiences into understanding, awareness and realization. Alien Contact and Human Evolution seeks to address the most significant aspect of living a life well- lived, which leads each and everyone of us to confront either through experience or intellect our consciousness as an Experiencer/Alien Abductee. I believe the most important attribute a human being can develop is using the opportunity of their life, to develop and evolve, to exceed ourselves and work to live beyond our self- perception, our biology and our enculturation. When you look around this world do you SEE those around you attempting to be the best part of who they are capable of being? Alien Contact and Human Evolution acknowledges that none of us, or the abductees I have known, as children or even as adults, ever seeks to see the world differently than the norm. Each of us, at least initially in our childhood, wanted to fit into our culture of origin. And it is very clear that each of us on this planet lives in our own world and seeks what everyone seeks, fulfillment and happiness. Yet, it continues to elude the majority of the 7 billion & 8. Earth. Joy S. Gilbert, April, 2. In creating this website, Alien Contact and Human Evolution, I did not wake up one morning and decide that I was an Experiencer/Alien Abductee, a Starseed or a Contactee and that was IT. Nor had I determined that my departure from the status quo was something I was looking to add to the paradox of my existence. Life can be difficult for everyone here on this little planet and I certainly wasn’t looking to add to mine. Rather, my intimate and deeply personal experiences were clearly present and teaching me about the world behind the veil long before I realized what was happening. Consequently, there was profound knowledge around Awakening to these experiences, which is something in this culture you do alone. I did reach out in the early stages of my Awakening, after I wrote my book, to a well- known and respected researcher. He was lovely, kind and respectful but in no way understood the invasive nature of these events that had been happening to me since childhood and throughout my life. Nor did he comprehend the spiritual implications toward Universal Awareness. He understood these things in theory, in his intellect, but not in reality or application to life. The implications of these events for me were predominantly spiritual in nature and design. They were not spiritual in the way many people “think” of spirituality. Rather, they were logical and pragmatic. They made sense of this world, allowing me to REMEMBER why I was here and who I was in reality. While these experiences were traumatic, they were also exquisite and filled with more knowledge than I could even begin to “think” or speak. Language can never convey the amount of knowledge and awareness inherent, within these experiences. Yet, these Beings were very clear about the direction they wished me to move in and I felt profoundly compelled to fulfill both their requests, my own awareness of them and my life’s imperative. In other words, I did not follow blindly. I took all that knowledge into myself and assessed for myself what this phenomenon was all about, what it meant to me and what it meant for others. My Ego was completely shattered. There was nothing more I could have experienced or known that was outside the box of accepted and our “Consensual Reality”, than these shocking and traumatic events. I knew speaking about these paranormal experiences and being authentic in relationship to myself and within my relationship to others, could have intense consequences and they did. The Beings were essentially guiding and giving me direction on how I was to move forward, which in and of itself was overwhelming. Throughout my life they had been guiding, protecting and teaching me, which was something I had always been aware. But, I had not previously realized they came in ships and that they were Extraterrestrial. I knew that I had been born into this dimension/world to go into Enlightenment in a human form, which I did. But, it was clear that I had to walk away from my life and those people, ideas, places and things that did not connect with my purpose, my work or my soul. Ironically, these residual ego feelings did not impact my ability to move forward with my awareness and understanding of these events. I unequivocally knew that I had come into this dimension to forget who I was and again be Awakened, to go into Enlightenment. I say again, because these are experiences and patterns, which I have been involved in and participating in several times. Just the term ENLIGHTENMENT allows us to recognize and realize ourselves as who we truly are. Enlightenment in this dimension can only occur on a cellular level to be effective in altering the consciousness of all life, which is it’s very purpose. Enlightenment has never existed or been experienced just as a philosophy! It is a physiological event, from which you can never go back. Once that state is breached in form you cannot return to the habitual patterns and lower levels of consciousness that existed while you lived in the world in your slumber and ignorance. No matter what the appearance or what the action is around you, you are completely and utterly AWARE! When someone chooses a path to Awaken or go into Enlightenment in their physical form, their form effects everything in all dimensional realities and Creation. Even physicists tell us that all life exists as a dynamic exchange of energy with everything else in the Universe. I saw behind the curtain, which is where I now live. Entering into this state of consciousness fully meant that I could never accept mediocrity, ignorance and the impermeable sleep states existing on this planet and within humankind, without working on whatever level available to me, to help human evolution. In time, I was able to overcome the internal paradox I initially experienced. It was clear to me on all levels that these precious Beings were my true family. They were sweet, kind and the world I live in now with them, is eons away from the world designed by those people who want humanity to stay ignorant, arrogant and asleep. Further, whether people like me or not, whether they understand me or not or whether they believe me or not, my work continues to be profoundly fulfilling and my only focus. I am living my authentic self. I do not allow others to determine my life experience. I had always known that these Beings were here with me. Still, having the physical experience of Awakening, I REMEMBERED that I was not what I appeared to be and no one is. Now tell me, how would you go about sharing these experiences with someone who was not having them or someone who had lived in the world in a profoundly different way than you? After all, I studied both Eastern and Western philosophy. Still, I am certain you can see the issues here? How can you find the resolution in a culture that denies the fact that Extraterrestrials and Interdimensional Beings exist? Okay, now forget everything I have said and just imagine anyone, trying to convey these experiences in an intelligent way? Yet, I do it every moment of every day. I make the effort to share this knowledge with others, because I think it is important for humanity to comprehend its present circumstances, which is a part of the message the Beings share. This knowledge doesn’t just flow through me, now does it? But there is a bigger problem here and that is the fear, doubt and secrecy. Here you can see a picture of how they appear as they come into my home. They are entering into the roof of my bedroom, which is on the second floor. For more pictures you can go to Pictures Ufos & Ets Ultimately, these events are profoundly and deeply spiritual. While I can share much of these experiences with others, it often feels off the point. Of course, only those of us who are having these experiences now or have had them in the past, but do not completely remember their connection to these events, recognize their traumatic and profoundly life shattering nature. Experiencers/Alien Abductees have not just thought or read about these events for fun, we have the experience of these Beings and the worlds they live in, which they share with us. So how could someone who does not have these experiences comprehend the effect that these Beings may have and continue to have on my life and other Experiencers/Alien Abductees, in consciousness and awareness within this human life experience? I do not say this to diminish significant life experiences that others may have. I recognize the power and value of all life experience. GMT- 4. Knowledge Base. Squatting RightsShould You Be Squatting At Your Desk? Sitting, we have heard, is the new smoking–that’s why we’ve been inundated with new ways to work, from standing desks to treadmill desks. For more awesome squats and moves. The squat is the king of all lower body exercises. Learn about squats and squat variations to work your buns, hips, and thighs. If you own a trademark and find that someone is holding it hostage as a domain name until you pay a large sum for it, you may be the victim of cybersquatting. Squatting is the act of occupying an abandoned or unoccupied space or building that the squatter does not own, rent or otherwise have permission to use. Darin Steen demonstrates how to do a perfect squat, and explains how this squatting exercise benefits your workout routine. But Bitehype blogger Feyyaz Alingan pitches us on an over- looked posture: the squat. It’s not sitting, it’s not standing; it’s squatting. It’s a posture that most of the West has lost its ability to do–tight hips and tight achilles due to spending our days in desk chairs might be the culprit–whereas folks in East and South Asia do it on the regular. The squat is awesome for a number of reasons: if you’re an advanced squatter (i. As Alingen notes, our bodies adapt to the postures we put them in–so if we’re only ever sitting in chairs, we lose a ton of hip mobility down the road, which is super harmful for our bodies. Additionally, the squat opens up your hips, which as any yoga teacher will tell you helps prevent lower back pain and aids you in taking care of your knees. As researchers from the Harvard Business School have found, our postures affect our behavior. In a series of experiments, psychologists had subjects work from different devices: an i. Pod touch, a laptop, or a desktop. In a curious ergonomic turn, the desktop users were bolder than the folks hunkered over petite devices. Why’s that? Because as HBS professor Amy Cuddy has dived into, our postures trigger different chemical reactions in our brains. In a famous example, putting a smile on your face actually helps you to feel happier, even if you don’t have a good “reason” to feel that way. Similarly, the more open your shoulders, arms, and the rest of you are, the more you’ll feel confident and capable–as Cuddy explains, hiding your hands is a sign of feebleness, while having your arms high and open is a posture posture that comes naturally to chimps, cobras, and humans. The inference we can make about squatting, then, is that it allows us to rest–unlike standing–while still remaining open–unlike sitting. ![]() Together, squatting is like the postural equivalent of a cup of green tea: you’ll be both calm and alert. Squatting for five hours might be a bit much to ask from your hips. But squatting for five or 1. Alingan shows, you could put your laptop on a bench and work from there, perch upon your chair (if it’s stable) or work from the ground. Squat (exercise) - Wikipedia. In strength training and fitness, the squat is a compound, full body exercise that trains primarily the muscles of the thighs, hips and buttocks, quadriceps femoris muscle (vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, vastus intermedius and rectus femoris), hamstrings, as well as strengthening the bones, ligaments and insertion of the tendons throughout the lower body. Squatting, the practice of living in abandoned or unoccupied spaces that a squatter does not legally own, is a great way to avoid. Forget standing desks. Here’s why we need to open up our minds–and our hips–to a new kind. ![]() Squats are considered a vital exercise for increasing the strength and size of the legs and buttocks, as well as developing core strength. Isometrically, the lower back, the upper back, the abdominals, the trunk muscles, the costal muscles, and the shoulders and arms are all essential to the exercise and thus are trained when squatting with the proper form. It is also considered a staple in many popular recreational exercise programs. Muscles engaged. Weights are often used, either in the hand or as a bar braced across the trapezius muscle or rear deltoid muscle in the upper back. The competition standard is for the crease of the hip (top surface of the leg at the hip joint) to fall below the top of the knee. From shallowest to deepest, these other standards are: bottom of hamstring parallel to the ground. The muscles around the hips provide the power out of the bottom. If the knees slide forward or cave in then tension is taken from the hamstrings, hindering power on the ascent. Returning to vertical contracts the muscles concentrically, and the hips and knees undergo extension while the ankle plantarflexes. Weight shifting forward on to the toes, and off the heels creates unnecessary stress on the knee joint. This added stress may lead to inflammation or other overuse injuries. Rapid descent risks being unable to complete the lift or causing injury. This occurs when the descent causes the squatting muscles to relax and tightness at the bottom is lost as a result. Over- flexing the torso greatly increases the forces exerted on the lower back, risking a spinal disc herniation. ![]() Squatting ToiletIf the knee is not tracking over the toes during the movement this results in twisting/shearing of the joint and unwanted torque affecting the ligaments which can soon result in injury. The knee should always follow the toe. Have your toes slightly pointed out in order to track the knee properly. Equipment. By putting the bar on a track, the Smith machine reduces the role of hip movement in the squat and in this sense resembles a leg press. Not many powerlifting federations allow monolift in competitions (WPO, GPC, IPO). Other equipment used can include a weight lifting belt to support the torso and boards to wedge beneath the ankles to improve stability and allow a deeper squat (weightlifting shoes also have wooden wedges built into the sole to achieve the same effect). Wrist straps are another equipment needed for squatting, it helps the wrist to keep a vertical position and support. They should be wrap above the wrist going down. Heel wedges and related equipment are discouraged by some as they are thought to worsen form over the long term. She squat- lifted a weight of 1. Thienna Ho (Vietnamese) on December 2. In powerlifting the barbell is often held in a lower position in order to create a lever advantage, while in weightlifting it is often held in a higher position which produces a posture closer to that of the clean and jerk. These variations are called low bar (or powerlifting squat) and high bar (or olympic squat), respectively. The legs should be slightly wider than shoulder width apart and the feet should be pointed outwards. The box squat is commonly utilized by power lifters to train the squat. Pausing on the box creates additional stimulus in the hips and glutes. Some people believe this form of isometric training allows for greater gains in the squat compared to a traditional Olympic style squat, while others contend that the increased spinal loading creates more opportunity for injury. Front squat – the weight (usually a barbell) is held in front of the body across the clavicles and deltoids in either a clean grip, as is used in weightlifting, or with the arms crossed and hands placed on top of the barbell. Hack squat – the barbell is held in the hands just behind the legs; this exercise was first known as Hacke (heel) in Germany. The hack squat was thus a squat performed the way Prussian soldiers used to click their heels (. One method of performing this is to deadlift the barbell, hold it against the thighs, squat into the lower portion of the squat, and then hold the bar on the thighs as you position the crook of your arm under the bar and then stand up. This sequence is reversed once the desired number of repetitions has been performed. Named after Ed Zercher, a 1. Split squat – an assisted one- legged squat where the non- lifting leg is rested on the ground a few 'steps' behind the lifter, as if it were a static lunge. Bulgarian squat – performed much like a split squat, but the foot of the non- lifting leg is rested on a knee- high platform behind the lifter. In the most common variant, a dumbbell is held behind the legs while the heels are lifted off the ground and the torso remains flat while the lifter leans backwards; sometimes done with a plate held on the chest and one arm holding onto a chair or beam for support. Unlike most other squat variations, Vince Gironda promoted sissy squat as a rectus femoris isolation exercise. Smith squat – a squat using a Smith machine. Hack squats can be done easily this way, as in the picture. Trap bar squat – a trap bar is held with hands at the sides. Bodyweight. This exercise is a predictor of total- body flexibility, mobility, and possible lower body dysfunction. Face the wall squat – performed with or without weights. It is primarily to strengthen the vertebrae tissues. Toes, knees and nose line up almost touching the wall. Advanced forms include shoeless, wrists crossed behind the back, and fists in front of forehead, all performed with toes and knees closed and touching the wall. Hindu squat – done without weight where the heels are raised and body weight is placed on the toes; the knees track far past the toes. Jump squat – a plyometrics exercise where the squatter engages in a rapid eccentric contraction and jumps forcefully off the floor at the top of the range of motion. Pistol – a bodyweight single leg squat done to full depth, while the other leg is extended off the floor. Sometimes dumbbells, kettlebells or medicine balls are added for resistance. Shrimp squat - also called the flamingo squat, a version of the pistols squat where instead of extending the non- working leg out in front, it is bent and placed behind the working leg while squatting, perhaps held behind in a hand. Some trainers allege that squats are associated with injuries to the lumbar spine and knees. Some coaches maintain that incomplete squats (those terminating above parallel) are both less effective and more likely to cause injury. A 2. 01. 3 review concluded that deep squats performed with proper technique do not lead to increased rates of degenerative knee injuries and are an effective exercise. The same review also concluded that shallower squats may lead to degeneration in the lumbar spine and knees in the long- term. Starting Strength: Basic Barbell Training, p. T-Shirt Hell, where all the bad t-shirts go! Crusades - Wikipedia. The Crusades were a series of religious wars sanctioned by the Latin Church in the medieval period, especially the campaigns in the Eastern Mediterranean aimed at recovering the Holy Land from Islamic rule. The term Crusades itself is early modern English, modelled on Middle Latin cruciatae, and has in more recent times been extended to include religiously motivated Christian military campaigns in the Late Middle Ages. The First Crusade arose after a call to arms in a 1. Pope Urban II, in which he urged military support for the Byzantine Empire and its Emperor, Alexios I, who needed reinforcements for his conflict with westward migrating Turks who were colonising Anatolia. One of Urban's stated aims was to guarantee pilgrims access to the Eastern Mediterranean holy sites that were under Muslim control, but scholars disagree as to whether this was the primary motivation for either Urban or those who heeded his call. Urban's wider strategy may have been to unite the Eastern and Western branches of Christendom, which had been divided since the East–West Schism of 1. ![]() Crazy Xxx Matures is the same thing happens to fans of traditional Crazier sex porn - they stop following fucking action and begin looking at interior designs or. The Crusades were a series of religious wars sanctioned by the Latin Church in the medieval period, especially the campaigns in the Eastern Mediterranean aimed at. Church. The enthusiastic response to Urban's preaching from all classes across Western Europe established a precedent for subsequent Crusades. Volunteers became Crusaders by taking a public vow and receiving plenary indulgences from the Church. Some were hoping for a mass ascension into heaven at Jerusalem, or God's forgiveness for all their sins. Others participated to satisfy feudal obligations, obtain glory and honour, or seek opportunities for economic and political gain. Modern historians hold widely varying opinions of the Crusaders. To some, their conduct was incongruous with the stated aims and implied moral authority of the papacy, as evidenced by the fact that on occasion the Pope excommunicated Crusaders. Crusaders often pillaged as they travelled, and their leaders generally retained control of captured territory instead of returning it to the Byzantines. During the People's Crusade, thousands of Jews were murdered in what is now called the Rhineland massacres. Constantinople was sacked during the Fourth Crusade. But the Crusades had a profound impact on Western civilisation: they reopened the Mediterranean to commerce and travel (enabling Genoa and Venice to flourish); they consolidated the collective identity of the Latin Church under papal leadership; and they constituted a wellspring for accounts of heroism, chivalry, and piety that galvanised medieval romance, philosophy, and literature. The Crusades also reinforced the connection between Western Christendom, feudalism, and militarism. Terminology. Not until the word crucesignatus, for one who was signed with the cross, was adopted at the close of the 1. This convention is used by Charles Mills in his History of the Crusades for the Recovery and Possession of the Holy Land (1. The Fifth and Sixth Crusades led by Frederick II may be considered a single campaign, as can the Eighth Crusade and Ninth Crusade led by Louis IX. Giles Constable describes four different perspectives among scholar. This broad definition includes attacks on paganism and heresy such as the Albigensian Crusade, the Northern Crusades, and the Hussite Wars, and wars for political or territorial advantage such as the Aragonese Crusade in Sicily, a Crusade declared by Pope Innocent III against Markward of Anweiler in 1. The term used in modern Arabic, . The resulting polity in the 7th and 8th centuries led to a rapid expansion of Arab power and influence to the northwest Indian subcontinent, across Central Asia, the Middle East, North Africa, southern Italy, the Iberian peninsula, and the Pyrenees. For example, the Fatimidcaliphal- Hakim bi- Amr Allah destroyed the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, but his successor allowed the Byzantine Empire to rebuild it. These Christians were allowed to maintain churches, and marriages between faiths were not uncommon. The campaign reached a turning point in 1. Alfonso VI of Le. In northern Europe, the Germans used crusading as a method to expand Christianity and their territories at the expense of the non- Christian Slavs. In 1. 05. 4 centuries of attempts by the Latin Church to assert supremacy over the Patriarchs of the Eastern Empire led to a permanent division in the Christian church called the East–West Schism. Beginning around 1. First Crusade, the Investiture Controversy was a power struggle between Church and state in medieval Europe over whether the Catholic Church or the Holy Roman Empire held the right to appoint church officials and other clerics. The result was intense piety and an increased interest in religious affairs amongst the general population in Catholic Europe and religious propaganda by the Papacy advocating a just war to reclaim Palestine from the Muslims. Participation in a crusade was seen as a form of penance that could counterbalance sin. The 1. 07. 1 victory over the Byzantine army at the Battle of Manzikert, once considered a pivotal event by historians, is now regarded as one step in the expansion of the Great Seljuk Empire into Anatolia. Alexios had restored the Empire's finances and authority, but he still faced a number of foreign enemies, particularly the migrating Turks who had colonised the sparsely populated areas of Anatolia. The historian Paul Everett Pierson, asserts that Urban also hoped that aiding the Eastern Church would lead to its reunion with the Western under his leadership. However, members of the high aristocracy from France, western Germany, the Low countries, and Italy were drawn to the venture, commanding their own military contingents in loose, fluid arrangements based on bonds of lordship, family, ethnicity, and language. Foremost amongst these was the elder statesman, Raymond IV, Count of Toulouse. He was rivalled by the relatively poor but martial Bohemond of Taranto and his nephew Tancred from the Norman community of southern Italy. They were joined by Godfrey of Bouillon and his brother Baldwin I of Jerusalem in leading a loose conglomerate from Lorraine, Lotharingia, and Germany. These five Princes were pivotal to the campaign that was also joined by a Northern French army led by Robert Curthose, Stephen, Count of Blois, and Robert II, Count of Flanders. Having already destroyed the earlier People's Crusade, the over- confident Sultan left the city to resolve a territorial dispute, enabling its capture after a Crusader siege and a Byzantine naval assault. This marked a high point in Latin and Greek co- operation and also the start of Crusader attempts to take advantage of political and religious disunity in the Muslim world: Crusader envoys were sent to Egypt seeking an alliance. The Normans resisted for hours before the arrival of the main army caused a Turkish withdrawal. After this, the nomadic Seljuks avoided the Crusade. Instead, Aleppo and Damascus had competing rulers. Eventually, Bohemond persuaded a tower guard in the city to open a gate and the Crusaders entered, massacring the inhabitants and pillaging the city. The Byzantines provided no assistance to the Crusaders' defence of the city because the deserting Stephen of Blois told them the cause was lost. Losing numbers through desertion and starvation in the besieged city, the Crusaders attempted to negotiate surrender, but this was rejected by Kerbogha, who wanted to destroy them permanently. Morale within the city was boosted when Peter Bartholomew claimed to have discovered the Holy Lance. Bohemond recognised that the only option now was for open combat, and he launched a counterattack against the besiegers. Despite superior numbers, Kerbogha's army, which was divided into factions and surprised by the commitment and dedication of the Franks, retreated and abandoned the siege. This ended only when news arrived that the Fatimid Egyptians had taken Jerusalem from the Turks, and it became imperative to attack before the Egyptians could consolidate their position. Bohemond remained in Antioch, retaining the city despite his pledge that this would return to Byzantine control, while Raymond led the remaining Crusader army rapidly south along the coast to Jerusalem. However, the arrival of craftsman and supplies transported by the Genoese to Jaffa tilted the balance in their favour. Crusaders constructed two large siege engines; the one commanded by Godfrey breached the walls on 1. July 1. 09. 9. For two days the Crusaders massacred the inhabitants and pillaged the city. Historians now believe the accounts of the numbers killed have been exaggerated, but this narrative of massacre did much to cement the Crusaders' reputation for barbarism . This relief force retreated to Egypt, with the vizier fleeing by ship. Of the other princes, only Tancred remained with the ambition to gain his own princedom. The Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia originated before the Crusades, but it received kingdom status from Pope Innocent III and later became fully westernised by the House of Lusignan. According to historian Jonathan Riley- Smith, these states were the first examples of . They are generally known as outremer, from the Frenchoutre- mer (. This may be in part due to a reluctance to relate Muslim failure, but it is more likely to be the result of cultural misunderstanding. Al- Afdal and the Muslim world mistook the Crusaders for the latest in a long line of Byzantine mercenaries rather than religiously motivated warriors intent on conquest and settlement. Even the Turks were divided, with rival rulers in Damascus and Aleppo. In Baghdad the Seljuk sultan vied with an Abbasid caliph in a Mesopotamian struggle. This gave the Franks a crucial opportunity to consolidate without any pan- Islamic counterattack. The third decade saw campaigns by Fulk V of Anjou, the Venetians, and Conrad III of Germany and the foundation of the Knights Templar. Court of Appeals Mourns Passing of Judge John T. Distinguished jurist served the court for more than 30 years. ![]() ![]() I have no desire to stay longer in this painful world, but for my poor children.’Dr. Hall, perhaps to distract his patient, read from an article in the Baltimore Sun about the election soon to be held in Maryland. Voters would decide whether or not to adopt a state constitution under which slaves would be set free without compensation to their owners. He then read a letter printed by the newspaper suggesting that the oath of allegiance proposed by President Abraham Lincoln and included in the new constitution might be taken even though conscience disapproved. Whatever else he did in that case, the chief justice had not compromised. The great case was Scott v. Sandford, the most consequential opinion ever issued by the U. S. The author of the opinion was Chief Justice Taney, who held that Negroes in bondage were property without rights and that Congress had no power to limit the expansion of slavery. The opinion ignited a political firestorm that set the nation irrevocably on the path to what novelist/historian Shelby Foote has called . Little is known of Scott’s origin, other than he was born in Virginia on the farm of the Peter Blow family, which later moved to St. Louis and became prominent. Louis, Scott was sold by the Blow family to a U. S. Army doctor named John Emerson. Emerson was eventually ordered to a fort in Illinois, a free state, and then to Fort Snelling in what is now Minnesota but was then a territory where slavery was banned under the Missouri Compromise of 1. Emerson took Scott with him as a personal valet, also planning to hire him out to residents of the forts, a common practice at the time. At Fort Snelling, Scott met and married slave girl Harriet Robinson, who had been acquired by Emerson from the fort’s Indian agent. Dred Scott managed to raise two children and keep his family from being sold — no mean feat for a slave. Emerson, accompanied by his slaves, returned to St. Louis after leaving the Army. After his sudden death in 1. Irene became the Scotts’ owner. Dred Scott tried to buy his freedom, but Irene Emerson refused to let the family go. Scott then demonstrated a remarkable ability to find lawyers to bring a series of lawsuits aimed at attaining his own and his family’s freedom. Dred and Harriet Scott’s first petitions were filed in state court in St. Their lawyers relied on an 1. Missouri Supreme Court case, Winny v. Whitesides, in which the Court held that when a master takes a slave to a free state . The court had followed the Winny ruling in every similar case presented over the next two decades, including one, Rachel v. Walker, where the slave won her freedom because her owner, a U. S. Army officer, had taken her to Fort Snelling in free territory. The Scotts’ claim appeared to be open and shut. The case was tried twice, in 1. St. Louis as the Old Courthouse. As the Scotts walked into the building on the first day of trial they could have passed a slave auction, since the courthouse steps were used by St. Such was the peculiarity of slave law that the Scotts could sue for their freedom inside a courthouse on whose outside steps they might be bought and sold. Both trials were presided over by Judge Alexander Hamilton, an anti- slavery Pennsylvanian. The simple task of the Scotts’ attorneys was to prove that Irene Emerson had owned Dred and Harriet in a free state or territory. Because slaves were barred from testifying, even in their own lawsuits, the Scotts’ proof had to come from former residents of the Army forts who had known the Emersons and their slaves. The Scotts’ lawyers botched the trial by calling the wrong witness from Fort Snelling, one Samuel Russell. He testified that, while Dred Scott had been hired out to his wife, he had no knowledge of Irene Emerson’s ownership of the Scotts. As a result, the jury returned a verdict for Irene Emerson. Fehrenbacher later wrote, . Emerson to keep her slaves simply because no one had proved that they were her slaves.’ The Scotts’ attorneys moved for a new trial, arguing that they had been surprised by Russell’s testimony. Judge Hamilton granted the motion for retrial. Dred Scott managed to find new lawyers. At the 1. 85. 0 trial they called Mrs. Russell, who testified that Irene Emerson was the owner of the Scotts. Judge Hamilton gave a charge based on the Winny case that required a verdict for the Scotts if the jury found that they had resided either in a free state or in a territory in which the Missouri Compromise barred slavery, which they indisputably had. The jury found in favor of the Scotts. Irene Emerson appealed the case to the Missouri Supreme Court, where it was heard in 1. The timing could not have been worse for the Scotts because sectional conflict over slavery had begun to boil over. In an opinion filled with resentful language, the Missouri Supreme Court, by a vote of 2- 1, reversed the judgment freeing the Scotts. The court repudiated its rulings in the Winny v. Whitesides and Rachel v. Walker cases and excoriated perceived Northern hypocrisy about slavery: . But this persistent slave managed to find new lawyers to take up his cause. His adversary had also changed — Irene Emerson had remarried and left St. Louis, and now her brother, John Sanford, who lived in New York, owned the Scott family. Dred Scott’s new attorney was Roswell Field, a lawyer from Vermont who left for St. Louis after an ill- fated marriage to a much younger woman. Field was later assisted by young Harvard Law School graduate and fellow Vermonter Arba Crane, who formed a close friendship with Dred Scott. Field filed a new suit in federal court on the basis of Article III, Section 2 of the Constitution, commonly known as the diversity clause, which gives federal courts jurisdiction over suits between citizens of different states. Scott, alleged to be a free citizen of Missouri, would be suing John Sanford, a citizen of New York. It was not a far- fetched theory because several Southern courts had recognized that the act of emancipation conferred at least some citizenship rights on a freed slave. Scott v. Sandford (the federal courts misspelled Sanford’s name) was filed in the federal circuit court of St. The lawsuit again asserted that Scott had been freed by his residence in Illinois and at Fort Snelling. The case was assigned to Judge Robert W. Wells, a Virginian who had been attorney general of Missouri. Wells rejected Sanford’s argument that Negroes of African ancestry could never be citizens within the meaning of the diversity clause. The case went to trial in 1. Judge Wells, though sympathetic to the Scotts, had no choice but to give a charge that reflected the ruling by the Missouri Supreme Court in Scott v. Emerson, since the federal case concerned solely a wrongful imprisonment charge and Scott had never proven unequivocally in any state case that he was declared free in Illinois. This amounted to a continuation of Scott’s servitude. Scott’s attorneys appealed to the U. S. Sitting on that highest court were four slave state justices, four justices from free states and Roger Taney from Maryland, a border state that permitted slavery. It is easy in hindsight to see why the Scott lawyers might have viewed Taney as a possible fifth vote in their favor. As a young lawyer, Taney had defended an abolitionist minister against charges of inciting slaves to rebellion. In his summation, he told the jury in defense of his client that . Once called a man with a . In appearance he was frail and soft- spoken, to some resembling an old wizard, but his eyes shone with bright and piercing intelligence. The case was argued in the Supreme Court in 1. Americans began to debate slavery with more than words. On May 2. 1, 1. 85. Lawrence, Kan., in the conflict known as . Senate by South Carolina Senator Preston Brooks. Two days after that John Brown — who, as one of his sons remembered, went . For many years, the family had vacationed at Old Point Comfort near Norfolk, Va. In the summer that the case reached the Supreme Court, an outbreak of cholera was reported in Norfolk. Taney’s daughter, Alice, was invited by concerned friends to vacation instead in Newport, R. I. She asked her father’s permission in a letter. He wrote in response, . Her mother died of a stroke the same day. Taney, then 7. 8 years old, had begun writing his autobiography at Old Point Comfort. As Taney biographer Carl Swisher wrote: . Taney was leaving Old Point, the scene of many happy summers and of one terrible tragedy, never to return, and the writing of the story of his life, which had begun there, was never to be resumed.’ Another historian suggested that the tragedy deprived Taney of emotional reserves necessary to maintain judicial balance. In the Supreme Court, Dred Scott was represented by Montgomery Blair, from one of the most influential families in American politics. John Sanford was represented by Missouri Senator Henry Geyer and Reverdy Johnson, regarded as the country’s leading Supreme Court advocate. After the first argument, it was clear that Geyer and Johnson were defending nothing less than slavery itself. In response to Scott’s claim to freedom by virtue of residence in a territory where slavery had been banned by the Missouri Compromise, they argued that the Compromise was unconstitutional. In challenging the authority of Congress to limit the expansion of slavery, the Sanford attorneys struck at the foundation of the legislative compromises that had saved the Union. Instead of issuing an opinion, the Supreme Court set the case down for another argument in December 1. Faculty and staff positions at hundreds of colleges and universities.
